Plano Home Elevators installs wheelchair platform lifts in Plano homes, the vertical platform lifts that carry a wheelchair user over a short rise. The step from the garage into the house, a raised front porch and a split-level change are places they go, and an enclosed version can travel between floors.

A platform lift takes far less space than a ramp for the same rise. We install them in Plano and in nearby Allen and Parker.

Platform lift options

Garage entry lifts

The door from an attached garage into the house can sit one or more steps above the garage floor. A platform lift beside those steps lets someone drive in, roll onto the platform and enter at house level, out of the weather. It needs a clear patch of garage floor and room to turn at the top, which can take part of a parking space.

Porch and entry lifts

Outdoor lifts at a front or back porch are built for rain and sun, with covers for the controls and a gate or door at the upper landing that stays shut until the platform arrives. They stand on a concrete pad beside the porch, and the porch may need a new opening in its railing.

Enclosed hoistway platform lifts

An enclosed platform lift runs inside its own shaft between floors, like a slow elevator with a platform instead of a cab. It needs less building work than a full elevator, but it travels more slowly and the rider holds the button for the whole trip. For a two-story house, compare it with through-the-floor home lifts that take a wheelchair.

Inclined platform lifts

An inclined platform lift carries a wheelchair along a stair on a rail and folds up against the wall when not in use. It needs a stair wide enough to leave a walking path past the folded platform, and it avoids cutting any floor.

Codes and inspection for platform lifts

Plano’s residential code requires platform lifts to meet ASME A18.1, the standard for platform and stairway lifts. Under Texas law, a platform lift installed in a single-family home must be inspected by a registered elevator inspector after installation, with a copy of the report going to the owner, the same as an elevator. The lift also needs a city permit and the electrical supply its maker specifies.

Paying for accessibility lifts

We make no promises about grants or insurance. Veterans with a service-connected disability can ask the VA about its housing adaptation grants, which have their own eligibility rules and do not cover every kind of equipment. For any other program or policy, ask the program itself whether a lift qualifies before the work is scheduled.

Frequently asked questions

How high can a platform lift go?

That depends on the model. Open platform lifts handle a modest rise such as a porch or garage step, while enclosed models can reach a second floor. The rated travel is in the maker’s specifications.

Can a platform lift go outside?

Yes. Outdoor-rated lifts have weather-resistant finishes and covered controls. They need a level concrete pad, power run to the lift, and a plan for rain and summer sun on the platform.

When the rise is a full floor, see home elevators for existing homes. Every option is on the Plano Home Elevators home page.
